Signing Your Photographs – [Photography Tips & Tricks]

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

In today’s episode we’ll talk about my process for Signing Fine Art Photography, creating Certificates of Authenticity and how I track my images.

The Pens I use are Sakura Pentouch Fine Tip Metallic Ink Markers:
Gold Pen: https://amzn.to/38S76Pd
Silver Pen: https://amzn.to/37Pcsth

You can download my Certificate of Authenticity template and spreadsheets here: https://bit.ly/2pz7ltL

!! NEW !! Learn to add a physical signature DIGITALLY in my updated Sign Your Photos video here » https://youtu.be/kf0RIZ2AULM

*Note: As predicted, the excel file is a bit of a mess after I converted my tables from Apple Numbers. Everything’s there and it looks like the formulas still work, but because Excel doesn’t allow multiple tables in a single sheet, it’s tried to plug everything into one table, which causes some wonkiness. It’s also replaced my checkboxes with true/false values because Excel doesn’t allow checkboxes. Apologies Windows folks. 😉

Thank you!! I've been googling this information for days and it's so kind of you to share the entire process in one easy to follow video. And my gosh thank you for your generosity in giving us access to the certificate and spreadsheets too!

  2. BEHIND THE CANVAS

Thank you so much for making this video, this is exactly what I need right now.

  3. Jeffrey G

Hi, I was wondering about going about signing a print that is on like Lustre paper or something? Do you just sign the back?

  4. Mike Vaughn

Thank you for the insightful video. Was wondering the labs that you use? Not sure you can indulge that info.?

  5. I don't sign on canvas because I'm not making limited editions on canvas but I know the feeling… I'm always afraid of screwing up when I'm signing my limited editions on fine art paper. When it's done I'm relieved 🙂
    Interesting channel, subscribed!

those bogus numbers are raising some very real insecurities in me (looks over at $30 print)

  7. John Scheibe

This was great, loved seeing the process! I've been on the hunt for some pens for signing prints, so I really appreciated being able to see what you use!

  8. Tom Pula

Oh my God. Thank you! Now I can stop wasting my time trying to come up with a spreadsheet. You checked all the boxes.

  9. helene_lia

thankyou so much for the info and templates. One question… How do we insert our own images on the authenticity certificate??

Hello Drew! Great video and templates, very helpful 🙂 I just noticed something that I assume to be an error on the "Economics at a glance" formula, would you please be able to confirm? You are calculating the "Print Earnings Total " (D4) = B4 + (D2 + D3) when it should be just a simple sum of D2 + D3. Since D2 and D3 are based on "profit", the "investment" was already taken in to account, if you add B4 to the formula again you are doubling up that negative amount. Am I correct or am I missing something? Would be great if you could please confirm 🙂

So glad I stumbled across this. I was struggling with the feeling of "legitimacy". In hindsight, keeping prints limited, having a certificate, and tracking everything in excel seems obvious, but I haven't been doing that so far (I also haven't been selling outside of my friends and family yet, I guess all those will be "special edition" copies). Probably makes for easier taxes at the end of the year too.

How do you decide how many prints are available of a certain shot? Is 250 your standard and its less for "really special" photos? Is it 250 per year or total, also if total, do you archive old shots and re-release them if demand goes up? Do you only sign and certify the big prints, and if yes, what happens when someone wants to buy a smaller version or special medium?

Thanks very much for this detailed video! I'm just about to sign a 20"*30" Hahnemuhle print and I done a good 4 page trial run lol sweaty hands and all that 🤣 I like the idea of the spreadsheet and the certificate too, thanks for sharing! Subscribed

  13. Julian Manjahi

Thank you for sharing your process as well as the templates.

  14. Moda Mont

what kind of print did you sign was it a canvass print and you signed right on the image ? I have seen some framed images from Jim Marshall and it appeared he signed the mounting board below the images and not right on the actual image , have you seen this done ? I'm just trying to get a sense of what is accepted in the industry, thank you and Peace !

  15. hom296

It's a pleasure to watch a well done video! Well done, Drew!
